Elizabeth Kish, LPN, at Touchette Regional Hospital was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
The nomination submitted read, “Elizabeth was caring for a patient that had become incontinent during a seizure. The patient was to be discharged home. Instead of sending the patient home in freezing temperatures while wearing paper scrubs, Elizabeth contacted the Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) and asked if the patient’s clothing could be washed and dried on the unit prior to the patient leaving. This allowed the patient to be discharged in clean, warm clothing.” Walter DeBaker, Director of Emergency Services, noted: “Caring for patients is second nature for our nurses. While they view it as just nursing, the patients and their family members view it as remarkable work that cannot be performed by just anyone. The DAISY Award is an awesome way to show the nurse thanks and gratitude.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
