TOUCHETTE ADDS ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY

June 1, 2021

Touchette Regional Hospital is pleased to welcome Alexander Rose, MD, MPHS, to the Behavioral Health department at the hospital.

“I am very excited to welcome Dr. Rose to the staff at Touchette,” stated Jay Willsher, president. “We will be the only facility in the metro-east area to offer this very modern version of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).”

Dr. Rose is a graduate of the Washington University in St. Louis (MD, MPHS). He completed his residency in psychiatry at Washington University and is an outside instructor for the psychiatry residency there as well.

“Electroconvulsive therapy is not what the public might envision, but is a very individualized and focused treatment method,” Dr. Rose explained. “The procedure can be performed for both inpatients as well as outpatients.

“The speed of improvement seen in patients is faster than if medication alone is prescribed,” he added.

Patients who might be considered for ECT would be those with a diagnosis of bipolar mania, bipolar depression, major depression, schizophrenia, catatonia, schizoaffective disorder, Parkinson’s disease, dementia related agitation/aggression, and status epilepticus. The ECT treatment is especially useful in treatment resistant patients.

Touchette Regional Hospital accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and most insurance plans. ECT treatment is covered under most health insurance plans.

Dr. Rose will see patients on provider referral only; appointments may be made by calling 618-332-4060.
