Touchette Regional Hospital Offers Tips to Help Lower Cholesterol

July 2, 2019

Touchette Regional Hospital (TRH) is offering tips to help lower cholesterol. This comes as nearly 28.5 million, or 11.9 percent, of American adults have high cholesterol levels totaling 240 mg/dL or higher (healthmetrics.org).

One of the simplest ways to improve cholesterol is through exercise. Take a brisk walk during your lunch hour or ride your bike to work. If you’re up for something more physical, play some tennis or basketball with friends. As long as you can put in 20 to 30 minutes of exercise five times a week, you’re in good shape.

Just a few changes in your diet can help a great deal. Curb some of those unhealthy foods that are high in saturated fats such as fatty cuts of beef, pork, butter, whole milk and fried foods. Go for apples, Brussels sprouts, oatmeal and pears. They are rich in soluble fiber which can reduce the absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream. Incorporate dairy foods into your meals and snacks that contain whey protein such as Ricotta cheese, yogurt and goat milk.

Do what you can to stop smoking. The nicotine causes a waxy plaque to build up in your arteries, increasing your risk of blood clots. Once you quit, your cholesterol begins to recover immediately, and with every cigarette-free day you’ll only get healthier.

The staff at Touchette Regional Hospital wants to help you get and stay healthy by improving your cholesterol. There are various lifestyle changes you can make today toget started. Make healthy choices and work with your doctor to get your cholesterol where it should be. See your healthcare provider for more information.
