Weight Gain Dangers

August 7, 2019

Stepping on the scale is a fearful action for most of us. That little number doesn’t seem so little these days; it always manages to go up. Maybe it’s just a pound or two a week - nothing too crazy. But that pound or two a week, every week is adding up fast! Before you know it, 10 extra pounds is tacked onto that “little number,” then 13 pounds, 20 and so on. Gaining and losing weight is a part of life - we get that. It’s when you continue to pile on the weight that many health dangers creep into your life.

Sleep Apnea is a condition linked to being overweight and results in an individual having one or more breathing halts while they sleep. Yes, you heard it right; a person actually stops breathing in their sleep. When weight gain and obesity are part of your life, you’re likely to have fat stored around your neck, reducing space in your airway. Smaller airways can lead to difficulty breathing and brief stops in your breathing altogether. Weight loss is critical to resolving this health condition as it can actually cure your sleep apnea. Don’t be afraid to talk with your doctor about plans to help with losing weight and getting your health back on track.

Osteoarthritis is a common result of weight gain and obesity. Every pound you gain places added pressure and extra mass on your joints. This typically results in pain and stiffness in the joints in your hands, hips, knees and lower back. Excess body fat can also cause inflamed and irritated joints, which increases your risk for osteoarthritis. Don’t be misled and think you need to be super skinny, because that’s not the case. You want to be at a healthy weight for your age and avoid falling into the “obese” category. Your joints are only meant to carry so much weight before they become stressed, inflamed and painful. If you suffer from osteoarthritis, you can greatly improve your symptoms by exercising to help decrease your pain and increase joint flexibility.

Gestational Diabetes can develop in pregnant women who are overweight, resulting in high blood sugar during pregnancy and likely causing concerns for the baby's health. With this condition, babies are at an increased risk of premature birth, being stillborn or suffering from defects to the brain and spinal cord.If you’re expecting, you can control your gestational diabetes by eating healthy foods and exercising. Unfortunately, dropping weight during your pregnancy isn’t encouraged or recommended, so if you’re already overweight, the best thing you can do is continue healthy eating habits and remain as active as you can to maintain your well-being and protect your baby.

The staff at Touchette Regional Hospital want you to be healthy. They understand how stresses of life can cause rapid weight gain and loss. But it’s critical that you regain control of your health by managing and maintaining your weight. Don’t let two pounds turn into six, then 10 and so on. There are far too many dangers that will quickly sneak up on you. Be aware, make healthy choices and work with your doctor, if necessary. You can do it - we know you can!
